INILAH.COM, Jakarta - Rela Dipecat dari satuan Brimob Polda Gorontalo dan memilih tejuni dunia hiburan, Norman Kamaru kuliah jurusan hukum di Universitas Bung Karno Jakarta lewat program beasiswa.

"Selain bernyanyi dan syuting, pada 2012 ini aku kuliah juga di Universitas Bung Karno, jurusan hukum," ujar Norman di RCTI, Kebon Jeruk, Jakarta Barat, Rabu (18/1).

Norman mengaku kuliah di perguruan tinggi merupakan impiannya sejak lama. Lantas, saat mendapat tawaran beasiswa Norman langsung menerima.

Kini, di sela-sela kesibukannya menyanyi, Norman merasa siap berbagi waktu dengan kuliah. "Aku sudah siap akan hal itu," tandasnya. [aji]

Seperti Bukan Video Musik Sang Perfeksionis

Setelah mengumumkan rencana peluncuran album baru Ariel dan rekan-rekan — yang sebagian besar berisikan versi instrumentalia lagu-lagu lawas Peterpan — pada Maret 2012 nanti, beberapa hari lalu Musica Studios merilis video musik dari lagu Ariel berjudul “Dara”.

Itu tentu sebuah kabar yang cukup menggembirakan sekaligus bikin penasaran. Kenapa?

Selama ini rata-rata video musik Peterpan selalu tampil dengan konsep atau cerita yang cukup jelas dan mengusung makna tersendiri. Suasana yang dihadirkan juga umumnya cenderung berkesan muram, sesuai isi lirik sebagian besar lagu-lagu Peterpan karya Ariel. Sebut saja seperti video musik lagu “Bintang di Surga”, “Semua Tentang Kita”, “Cobalah Mengerti”, “Walau Habis Terang”, dan “Tak Ada yang Abadi”.

Sekarang, bagaimana dengan tembang bertajuk “Dara” yang diciptakan Ariel saat berada di lembaga pemasyarakatan? Pastinya juga mengundang rasa penasaran dan ekspektasi cukup besar. Apalagi sutradaranya adalah Rizal Mantovani, nama yang juga pernah menggarap beberapa video musik Peterpan. Salah satunya, “Bintang di Surga” yang sempat meraih penghargaan sebagai Video of the Year 2006 dari MTV Indonesia.

Selain itu, liriknya sendiri tidak jauh dari nuansa muram dan sendu, seperti kebanyakan lagu Peterpan. Berkisah tentang seseorang yang berpesan kepada sang kekasihnya agar tetap tabah, jangan bersedih, dan bertahan menghadapi tekanan lingkungan hingga mereka berdua bisa bertemu kembali untuk melanjutkan masa depan bersama.

Dengan beberapa faktor tersebut, secara teori, seharusnya video ini tidak akan mengecewakan mereka yang terbiasa menikmati video musik zaman Ariel dan rekan-rekannya kala masih mengusung nama Peterpan.

Sayangnya, begitu melihat video ini diawali adegan seorang cewek sedang berjalan-jalan santai di sebuah padang rumput yang didominasi dengan warna-warna cerah seperti kuning dan hijau muda, saya langsung kecewa.

Saya jadi seperti menonton video musik bukan milik Ariel, sang vokalis bernama asli Nazril Irham yang dikenal agak perfeksionis itu. Suasana dan kualitasnya terasa jauh berbeda jika dibandingkan dengan video-video musik Peterpan selama ini.

Apalagi kemudian video musik “Dara” ini menampilkan sederet adegan lain yang terkesan hanya sekadar tempelan tanpa didukung konsep cerita yang kuat.

Misalnya adegan seorang cowok yang berbaring di tanah dengan kobaran api di sekelilingnya, siluet sosok seperti Ariel, gitar terbakar, pemandangan matahari terbit, bunga mawar merah merekah, cewek meloncat-loncat dengan gembira di padang rumput, gitar melayang di udara, cewek melepas sepasang burung merpati, hingga adegan cewek dan cowok berpelukan. Semuanya seperti tidak saling terkait.

Itu masih ditambah dengan tempelan adegan penampakan Ariel lewat layar televisi kuno. Sesuatu yang terasa terlalu dipaksakan, karena hal tersebut justru makin mengurangi unsur dramatis di video ini.

Secara keseluruhan, video musik ini terbilang tidak berhasil menampilkan suasana yang bisa mewakili isi lagu yang cenderung sendu itu. Sayang sekali. Lagu enak tapi tidak didukung video yang menarik.

Jakarta, 19/1 (ANTARA) - Menteri BUMN Dahlan Iskan membantah menerima uang atau `fee` ketika menjabat Dirut PLN, seperti yang dinyatakan oleh terdakwa kasus korupsi, M. Nazaruddin.

"Masa saya gitu-gitu lah," kata Dahlan ketika ditemui sebelum rapat kerja pemerintah 2012 di JI-Expo Kemayoran, Jakarta, Kamis.

Media massa ramai memberitakan pernyataan Nazaruddin bahwa Dahlan diduga menerima `fee` terkait sebuah proyek di PLN pada 2010.

Nazaruddin mengatakan, jatah uang untuk Dahlan dia ketahui melalui pesan singkat yang dikirim oleh seorang bernama Wila.

Wila juga menyampaikan hal tersebut ketika bertemu Nazaruddin, Sutan Bhatoegana, dan Mindo Rosalina Manulang di restoran sebuah hotel di Jakarta.

Wila dikenal Nazaruddin sebagai pengusaha yang lama bekerja sama dengan PLN.

Dahlan mengaku tidak tahu atau mengenal Wila. Dia juga tidak mengetahui adanya aliran dana kepadanya ataupun PLN.

Menurut dia, Nazaruddin didakwa melakukan korupsi dalam kaitannya sebagai kader partai politik dan anggota DPR. Padahal, proyek PLN yang dimaksud itu tidak ada kaitannya dengan DPR.

"Proyek itu sama sekali tidak ada hubungan sama APBN dan DPR," katanya.

Dahlan tidak tahu persis rincian proyek yang dimaksud. Dia hanya memberikan penjelasan umum bahwa proyek itu bernilai sekitar Rp4 triliun.

Semua pasti ingin memiliki gigi putih cemerlang, namun tak semua punya uang untuk memutihkan gigi di dokter atau dengan cairan pemutih gigi yang mengandung efek samping. Padahal gigi putih bersinar juga bisa didapatkan dengan mengonsumi lima makanan berikut ini.

1. Stroberi
Buah cantik ini memproduksi enzim malic acid yang membantu memutihkan gigi. Selain dengan langsung memakannya, stroberi bisa dimanfaatkan untuk memutihkan gigi dengan cara dihaluskan, digosokkan ke gigi, diamkan selama lima menit lalu bilas dan gosok gigi seperti biasa.

2. Buah-buahan dan sayuran yang renyah
Contoh terbaik adalah apel, seledri, dan wortel. Menggigit dan mengunyah buah dan sayuran seperti ini akan membantu membersihkan plak, "menggosok" gigi agar lebih putih bersinar, dan meningkatkan produksi air liur yang baik bagi kesehatan mulut.

3. Keju
Keju dan bahan olahan susu lainnya seperti yoghurt mengandung lactic acid yang berfungsi melindungi gigi. Sebuah penelitian menunjukkan bahwa anak-anak yang mengonsumsi yoghurt empat kali seminggu lebih terlindung dari pembusukan gigi dibanding anak-anak yang tak minum yoghurt. Sedangkan untuk memutihkan gigi, keju adalah pilihan yang baik karena selain melindungi gigi dari kebusukan, keju juga mengandung kalsium dan fosfor yang berguna dalam pembentukan enamel gigi.

4. Jeruk dan nanas
Saat mengonsumsi jeruk, nanas, dan buah-buahan asam lainnya, mulut memproduksi air liur lebih banyak, yang membantu membersihkan gigi secara alami.

5. Baking soda
Sebuah penelitian tahun 2008 menemukan bahwa pasta gigi yang mengandung baking soda berfungsi lebih baik dalam membersihkan plak. Anda bisa saja menggunakan baking soda langsung untuk membersihkan gigi, namun para dokter menyarankan agar hal ini tak dilakukan terlalu sering karena bisa mengikis enamel gigi. Pilihan paling aman adalah menggunakan pasta gigi yang mengandung baking soda.

6. Permen karet yang mengandung xylitol
Xylitol adalah pemanis alami yang dapat mencegah plak. Xylitol juga menetralkan tingkat keasaman di dalam mulut dan meningkatkan produksi air liur untuk membersihkan gigi.

Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR)

Rasio Kecukupan Modal (CAR) adalah rasio yang regulator dalam sistem perbankan gunakan untuk melihat kesehatan bank, khusus modal bank untuk risiko. Regulator dalam sistem perbankan lagu CAR suatu bank untuk memastikan bahwa hal itu dapat menyerap jumlah yang wajar kerugian.

Regulator di sebagian besar negara menetapkan dan memantau CAR untuk melindungi nasabah, sehingga mempertahankan kepercayaan terhadap sistem perbankan.

Rasio kecukupan modal adalah rasio yang menentukan kapasitas bank dalam hal memenuhi kewajiban waktu dan risiko lain seperti risiko kredit, risiko pasar, risiko operasional, dan lain-lain. Ini adalah ukuran dari berapa modal digunakan untuk membiayai aktiva risiko bank.

Modal Bank sehubungan dengan risiko bank adalah rumusan yang paling sederhana, modal bank adalah “bantal” untuk potensi kerugian, yang melindungi nasabah bank atau pemberi pinjaman lain.

Bagaimana rasio kecukupan modal CAR dihitung?

Rasio ini dihitung dengan membagi inti 1 +inti 2 modal dengan aset tertimbang menurut risiko.

Aktiva Tertimbang Menurut Risiko * 8%

Dua jenis modal diukur untuk perhitungan ini. Tier satu modal adalah modal dalam neraca bank yang dapat menyerap kerugian tanpa bank dituntut untuk berhenti berdagang.

Baris dua modal dapat menyerap kerugian dalam hal suatu lilitan-up dan sehingga menyediakan tingkat yang lebih rendah perlindungan terhadap deposan.

Apakah nilai-nilai apakah Rasio Kecukupan Modal CAR dapat mengambil?

Standar minimum yang ditetapkan oleh Bank for International Settlements (BIS) adalah 8% (terdiri dari 4% masing-masing dari baris 1 dan baris 2 modal).

CAR minimum Singapura lebih ketat diatur secara default sebesar 12% (terdiri dari 8% dan 4% baris1 baris 2).

Keuntungan menggunakan Rasio Kecukupan Modal CAR:

Pada tahap awal implementasi Basel, kecukupan modal bank dihitung sebagai rasio aktiva kali. Pendekatan ini tidak mengambil profil risiko aset ke rekening. Jelas bahwa bank harus menjaga modal dalam cadangan untuk aset berisiko.

Karena berbagai jenis aset memiliki profil risiko yang berbeda, CAR terutama menyesuaikan untuk aktiva yang kurang berisiko dengan memungkinkan bank untuk “diskon” aset berisiko rendah. Jadi, misalnya, pada aplikasi yang paling dasar, utang pemerintah diperbolehkan% 0 “bobot risiko”. Ini juga berarti bahwa utang pemerintah dikurangi dari jumlah aktiva untuk tujuan perhitungan CAR.

When his top aides walked out this spring and left his campaign in tatters, Newt Gingrich considered dropping out. But he says it was his wife, Callista, who persuaded him to soldier on.

"She told me to stay in the race," Gingrich said recently in eastern Iowa.

He listened.

Now as voting nears in the race to decide the Republican presidential nominee, Callista Gingrich has stepped up her presence on the campaign trail, especially in Iowa where social conservatives hold powerful sway. A visible reminder of her twice-divorced husband's past infidelity, she simultaneously serves as a symbol of his devotion to family. She gives some conservatives pause, and others assurance.

The Gingrich camp is betting that anyone who doubts whether the former House speaker truly has mended his ways need only look to his wife, who stands at his side, ramrod straight and smiling. Prim and petite with striking platinum-blonde hair, the campaign is dispatching her strategically: She appears with her husband, more than 20 years her senior, in a cheery Christmas campaign television ad, and the two frequently host his-and-her book signings after campaign events.

Her children's book about Ellis, a patriotic elephant that loves American history — conveniently hit The New York Times best-seller list as her husband's White House bid was starting to take off. She is featured prominently on his website. And it is rare for Newt Gingrich to deliver remarks that aren't sprinkled with references to "Callista and I."

His devotion to her is apparent, some say distracting to his White House bid. As his poll numbers started to waver last weekend, he left the campaign trail in Iowa to take a seat at a holiday concert in Virginia, where she played the French horn.

Callista Gingrich was linked to upheaval early in the campaign. It was jewelry Gingrich bought for her that spurred days of bad press coverage focused on a no-interest line of credit at Tiffany's worth up to $500,000, reinforcing the image that he's out of touch with regular people smarting from the economic downturn. His trip with her to the Greek isles fueled the idea that he wasn't taking the campaign seriously.

Aides who fled the campaign earlier this year pointed to Callista Gingrich as the source of the tension between her husband and his staff.

Still, his rebound would seem to give credence to her value as a trusted adviser.

Yet for all her time in the public eye, she is largely unknown, having granted few interviews and rarely speaking from the podium at her husband's events. She works the crowd afterward, instead, posing for photos and shaking hands.

"I think she's just lovely," said 62-year-old Janet McDonald, after shaking Mrs. Gingrich's hand at a Hy-Vee Grocery Store in Mount Pleasant during a recent Iowa campaign swing. "They may not have started out right. But if they have made their peace with God, than there really is nothing else I need to know."

Gingrich, 68, has acknowledged having an extramarital affair with the woman who is now his third wife when he was speaker of the House and she worked for the House Agriculture Committee.

The scandal that colored the beginning of their relationship may explain her wariness of the media.

Callista Gingrich will chat with reporters about the bitter cold weather in Iowa, where she attended college, and discuss an upcoming Christmas celebration near her Virginia home. Questions about anything more substantive are met with a tight smile.

"You'll have to ask R.C," she says politely, referring to Gingrich campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond.

The campaign declined a request from The Associated Press to interview Callista Gingrich.

At a campaign stop in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Gingrich was asked about his wife as she looked on, perched on a counter surrounded by reporters the campaign refused to let her talk to. The former Georgia congressman proudly ticked off her resume as a concert pianist, professional singer, filmmaker and author,

"She's a very talented person who works very hard," he said. "We're waiting to unleash her."

Though she rarely speaks at her husband's events, Callista Gingrich made an exception at an informal gathering of high school government students in Sioux City, Iowa, who were listening to the candidate. One had asked what he should do to prepare himself to run for president himself. Newt Gingrich urged the teenager to gain broad life experience and work on a campaign.

Then his wife interjected. "You should study this country's history. I think that is very important," she said.

Her husband, of course, has done just that.

Roast Prime Rib with Thyme Au Jus

Roast Prime Rib with Thyme Au Jus

Ingredients

1 bone-in prime rib (6 to 7 pounds)
8 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
Salt and coarsely ground black pepper
2 cups red wine
4 cups beef stock
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme leaves

Directions

Thirty minutes before roasting the prime rib, remove from the refrigerator and let come to room temperature.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Make small slits all over the prime rib and fill each slit with a slice of the garlic. Season liberally with the salt and coarse pepper, place on a rack set inside a roasting pan and roast for about 2 hours until medium-rare, or until a thermometer inserted into the center of the meat registers 135 degrees F. Remove the meat to a platter, and tent with foil to keep warm.

Place the roasting pan on top of the stove over 2 burners set on high heat. Add the wine to the pan drippings in the pan and cook over high heat until reduced, scraping the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Add the stock and cook until reduced by half. Whisk in the thyme and season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Slice meat as desired and serve with thyme au jus

‘X Factor’ finale: And the winner is...comeback kid Melanie Amaro

Melanie Amaro -- the teenaged singer Simon Cowell sent home during auditions – won the first edition of Cowell’s “X Factor,” which means she lands the much-promised $5 million recording contract and will appear in a Pepsi commercial during next year’s Super Bowl broadcast on Fox network.

Melanie was the comeback kid after Cowell tossed her off during the final round of auditions. Then he re-wrote his own show rules so he could bring her back into the race after, he said, realizing his mistake.

The 19-yeary-old student from Sunrise, Florida overcame confidence problems caused by that competition whiplash, to beat runner up Josh Krajcik – the 30-year-old surviving member of the so-called “Over 30’s” team, who’d been mentored by former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger.

Unlike Fox’s other singing competition, “American Idol,” the network’s new fall entry does not set an upper age limit on competitors; the category in which Krajcik competed had also included LeRoy Bell, who was pushing 60.

“We came here to find a superstar and we found a superstar,” Cowell said after show host Steve Jones announced the results at the end of a two-hour broadcast that had included performances by Justin Bieber, Stevie Wonder, 50 Cent, Ne-Yo, and Pitbull.

“Thank you for everyone who supported the show – I’m very grateful,” added Simon in a rare instance of on-screen humility. In its U.S. debut, “X Factor” improved Fox’s ratings fortunes considerably and became a major new fall ratings player, but fell well short of the 20 million viewers Cowell had so cockily forecast it would attract before its launch.

“Thank you so much! I’m so happy – I’ve wanted this all my life!” raved Amaro, who, on the strength of her voice won a competition that seemed to want to make the race all about relatability.

“X Factor” second runner up Chris Rene was fresh out of rehab for drug addiction when he auditioned for the reality competition series which has been a major ratings hit in the UK, where it got its start, and in other countries.

About one hour into the show, Rene, the guy who had been forecast to win by various companies that measure internet buzz, was named third-place finisher.

“I can hardly believe it!” show host Steve Jones raved. “How do you feel?”

“I feel amazing that I got to do this…I just got to say ‘thank you’,” the easy-listening hip hopper said when he got the hook.

Anyway, here’s how the show went:

The “ X Factor” finale opens Thursday night with the three remaining X-testants singing Christmas tunes.

For Melanie Amaro that’s Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You.” Judge Nicole Scherzinger says that was “princess goddess warrior” singing. Judge Paula Abdul compliments her on wearing her hair off her face. Melanie’s mentor, show creator Simon Cowell says he wants to take the opportunity to thank her for being such a pleasure to work with and that he’s now praying she will win because she deserves it.

Chris Rene emotes his way through “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” after which his mentor, Nicole tells him “You are a star from the inside out” and Simon notes the competition would not have been the same without him. But his mentor, LA Reid, insists his experience can truly change the world.

Josh Kracjik sings “Please Come Home for Christmas.” Simon says Krajcik illustrates why he does not believe in putting an upper age limit on singing competition participants.

Justin Bieber performs Mel Torme’s “The Christmas Song,” or as Biebs styles it “Chestnuts (yeah) roasting (yeah,yeah) on an open fire (yeah, yeah, yeah)” because the Bieb doesn’t do musical rests. He’s joined by Stevie Wonder; Justin does some spins while Stevie sings.

Next number: “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.” The X-producers try their usual trick of upstaging a perfomer with dancers doing rhythmic interpretations but Bieber seems oblivious and works the edge of the stage with hand touches.

Bieber brings out waifish Drew, the teenager for whom Simon had such grand hopes, to sing the final bar then graciously makes all her wall-poster dreams come true with a hug and a hand kiss. Instead of letting the newly-brunette-d Drew her have her moment, show host Steve Jones pops up for the required interview, and says that Drew’s “dream was standing on the beach with Justin, watching the sun go down” to which Drew replies “Yeah, that was kind of better.”

“It’s time to get serious,” Steve says, as the 9 o’clock hour approaches, because one contestant will be sent home. But, commercials before “serious.”

Steve calls the contestants and their and back to the stage.

And the loser is (making us wait, making us wait, making us wait)…Chris Rene. Gasp! Rene had seemed like a crowd favorite based on the reaction of the in-studio audience (who chanted his name last night), and the show producers and judges had so thoroughly worked over the fact that he was recently out of drug rehab. Both Simon and Chris’s mentor LA Reid claimed several times on air Wednesday night that Chris was still in the competition because he had promised HIM, not the other guy, that he would stay sober). So we just kind of assumed – well, that America couldn’t say no to drug recovery, no matter if Chris was clearly a weaker singer than Josh or Melanie.

Now we know where America stands -- apparently firmly on the side of singing chops.

Steve tells Chris he “can’t believe we are actually saying good bye to you,” but Chris is philosophical, saying “I got to touch a lot of people’s hearts out there, and I just got to say ‘Thank you’.” But Steve can’t let it go: “This is weird,” he adds” before throwing it to the judges for comment. “This is how it turned out but it doesn’t matter, this is my man,” says LA.

Steve – always at his school-marmish best in the post-whack-a-contestant scrum on stage -- shines once again. “I’ll have to send you off now, please! Josh, give him a quick hug!” he says.

We don’t think Steve throws fun parties.

A taped bit follows: The Top 5 Most Shocking Moments, of which No. 1 is the take down of 13-year-old Rachel Crow, who collapsed in a heap on the stage and bawled like a baby when she got the hook. We are guessing that including this taped bit is as close to an apology as we’re getting from the show producers for staging The End of Rachel’s Childhood on national television. Or, maybe they just think it was great television.

And here’s little Rachel live, and healed, and sounding as cheerful as ever. “First, I’m doing amazing, thank you. Second there are amazing things coming in the future,” she tells Steve, adding, “And, third I’m going to steal your job!”

She gets to introduce the next act, Leona Lewis to sing “Run”. Leona is the winner of the 2006 British X-Factor and it’s easy to see why: She looks like a model and sings pretty well. While she sings, images of the past X-season are projected on a screen behind her, prompting periodic outbursts from the audience.

The medley inspires Steve to ask the judges “what was the year like for you?” LA Reid calls it “an emotional journey.” Paula Abdul calls it “one of the most exciting job experiences I’ve ever had”—uh, oh -- sounds like somebody is working on her LinkedIn profile! She thanks Simon for the opportunity and thumps him on the back. Simon uses his turn to thank God that Leona Lewis won on one of his shows.

Coming up, Steve says “50 Cents!”

But, first, commercials, and another chance for Steve to ask Melanie and Josh how they are feeling.

And, another taped bit: LA vs. Simon Smackdown:

LA to Simon: “You must be really rich because $5 million doesn’t mean much to you.”

Simon to LA: “I am sick to death of your pointless, stupid criticism.”

And so on.

Memo to X-producers: Hire some writers for these guys!

Out comes 50 Cent; who performs “Waiting Till Tonight” but with a lot of gaps of edited silence. The song goes something like this:

“(redacted)(redacted)baby(redacted)

(redacted)(redacted)how you want it(redacted)

You gon’ get it, you gon’ get it!”

And dancers in short shorts set a whole new limit for explicitness for an X-production number.

Another taped bit. Nicole vs. Paula, The Cry-Off, showing weepy moments during the season for the two lady judges. Nicole wins by far, based on the very special End of Rachel’s Childhood Episode, which the producers just can’t stop bringing up.

Pitbull and Ne-Yo perform “International Love” and “Give Me Everything,” and out comes Marcus Canty who compares very well to these pros. We’ve got a whole new perspective on Marcus.

The two finalists will duet. Josh seems to enjoy it, Melanie looks like the pressure is getting to her, as they run through “Heroes,” the Oasis/David Bowie/Wallflowers tune. The most memorable part of the performance: realizing that the two best singers actually made it through to the end.

And now, finally, it’s time to announce a winner. Out come the two finalists with their mentors while, for the last time this year, we hear that ominous, pagan-sacrifice music from Carmina Burana that always made it seem every week like an X-testant was going to end up not just rejected, but burned at the stake.

Josh looks actually happy. Melanie is in pain. Simon has his eyes closed.

Making us wait. Making us wait. Making us wait.

Melanie wins!

Tears. Hugs. And of course, Steve: “If it’s even possible, can you tell me how you feel in this moment?”

Melanie can’t really. She’s ignoring him and dealing with the people who’ve been allowed to rush her on stage.

“Give her a hug for a second and I’ll be right back,” Steve vamps. He turns to Josh who graciously says “Melanie deserves it, she has a wonderful voice…I got to be myself, sing what I want to sing and I couldn’t be happier.” True, he did make it through the competition with his integrity intact -- always a challenge in one of these shows.

Melanie is on her knees, prayerfully. Family members rush her on stage.

Steve grabs Simon: “She’s going to be a star. She’s going to represent this country.”

Steve, such a fussbudget, shouts to mobbed Melanie: “Melanie, you do know you have to sing in a moment?”

NEW YORK December 9, 2011 (AP)

Comic book industry pioneer Jerry Robinson, who helped create Batman sidekick Robin the Boy Wonder and their arch-nemesis The Joker, has died at age 89.

An editor and friend, Charles Kochman, said Robinson was different from most artists in the field because he worked on every kind of comic genre, from political cartoons to theater illustrations.

"Jerry brought a realism to comics — and a sense of humor," said Kochman, his editor at Abrams Comic Arts, which last year published a book called "Jerry Robinson: Ambassador of Comics."

Robinson not only used his fame and position in the industry to serve as its ambassador but also fought on behalf of other artists and creators — especially to win credit for their work, including the Superman series. Initially, in the 1930s and '40s, publishers owned the rights and would discard drawings after they were used.

Robinson died in his sleep Wednesday at a hospice in New York where he lived. He was a native of Trenton, N.J. He was only 17 when he was hired by Batman creator Bob Kane. The two had met by chance at a resort in the Catskill Mountains, where Robinson had a summer job selling ice cream. Kane noticed Robinson because he was wearing a white jacket decorated with his own illustrations.

In the early 1940s, Robinson "illustrated some of the defining images of pop culture's greatest icons," said Jim Lee, co-publisher of DC Entertainment Inc., the parent company of Batman publisher DC Comics.

While Robinson is credited by many comic enthusiasts as the primary creator of The Joker for issue No. 1 of Batman, he and Kane clashed over who was first to dream up the caped crusader's arch-enemy. In a 1994 interview, Kane said he and writer Bill Finger had come up with the idea and Robinson then produced a joker playing card for inspiration.

Robinson was hired away from Kane's shop by the Batman publisher, for which he drew many of the most striking covers from the golden age of comics, such as that of "Batman" No. 13, showing the caped crusader parachuting down.

In the 1950s, he started drawing newspaper comic strips, political cartoons and cover illustrations for Broadway's "Playbill."

Later in life, Robinson taught at New York's School of Visual Arts and was president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists and the National Cartoonists Society.

"He saw the value of comics as an art," Kochman said.

In recent years, rare issues of comic books have fetched hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction.

Robinson also served as a historian, authoring "The Comics: An Illustrated History of Comic Strip Art" and curating gallery exhibits, including one of the biggest at the Kennedy Library in Washington in 1973 that included all the genres of the strip comic art form.

Mike Marts, editor of the Batman line at DC Comics, said Robinson was "an innovator, a pioneer in storytelling."

"The streets of Gotham City," Marts said, "are a little lonelier today."

Study: Texting While Driving Increased Drastically

Two out of 10 drivers say they've sent messages from behind the wheel

WASHINGTON — Texting while driving increased 50 percent last year despite a rush by states to ban the practice, federal safety officials said Thursday. Two out of 10 drivers say they've sent messages from behind the wheel — and that spikes much higher among young adults.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration takes an annual snapshot of drivers' behavior by staking out selected stoplights and intersections to count people using cellphones and hand-held Web devices that allow them to text, view directions, check emails, surf the Internet, or play games. At any given time, just under 1 percent of drivers were texting or manipulating hand-held devices.

The activity increased to 0.9 percent of drivers in 2010, up from 0.6 percent the year before.

In a separate telephone survey of drivers, 18 percent said they've sent texts or emails while at the wheel. That number jumps to half among younger drivers, ages 21 to 24.

The survey also found that most drivers will answer a cellphone call while driving and most will continue to drive while they talk. NHTSA surveyed 6,000 drivers ages 18 or older in the national poll conducted a year ago and released Thursday.

"What's clear from all of the information we have is that driver distraction continues to be a major problem," NHTSA Administrator David Strickland said.

The increase in texting while driving came even though many states have banned the practice. Last month, Pennsylvania became the 35th state to forbid it.

Jonathan Adkins, a spokesman for the Governors Highway Safety Association, said the increase is alarming.

"It is clear that educational messages alone aren't going to change their behavior," Adkins said. "Rather, good laws with strong enforcement are what is needed. Many drivers won't stop texting until they fear getting a ticket."

The safety administration reported earlier this year that pilot projects in Syracuse, N.Y., and Hartford, Conn., produced significant reductions in distracted driving by combining stepped-up ticketing of drivers with high-profile public education campaigns.

Before and after each enforcement wave, NHTSA researchers observed cellphone use by drivers and conducted surveys at driver' license offices in the two cities. They found that in Syracuse, hand-held cellphone use and texting declined by a third. In Hartford, there was a 57 percent drop in handheld use and texting behind the wheel dropped by nearly three-quarters.

There were an estimated 3,092 deaths in crashes affected by distractions in 2010, the safety administration said. That number was derived using a new methodology aimed at getting a more precise picture of distracted driving deaths and can't be compared to tallies from previous years, NHTSA officials said.

Overall, 32,885 people died in traffic crashes in the United States in 2010, a nearly 3 percent drop and the lowest number of fatalities since 1949. Traffic deaths have been declining steadily for several years. Safety researchers generally attribute the lower deaths to a decline in driving because of the poor economy combined with better designed and equipped cars and stronger safety laws.

Bucking the trend, there were 4,502 motorcycle deaths in 2010, a 0.7 percent increase. That may mean the sudden 16 percent decline in motorcycle deaths seen in 2009 is beginning to reverse. Overall, motorcycle deaths have doubled since 1995.

US soft drinks company Coca-Cola is for the first time putting the secret formula for its signature beverage on 'display'. But visitors to to a new exhibit at the World of Coca-Cola museum in Atlanta, Georgia shouldn't expect to learn too much -- the museum will only be showing the metal box that houses the recipe.

The box, which until recently had not left a vault in an Atlanta banksince 1925, has been transferred to the museum in the southern US city, which is also home to the company's headquarters.

"This is a special day in Coca-Cola history, and the perfect culmination to our 125th anniversary celebrations this year," chief executive Muhtar Kent said in a statement Thursday.

Coca-Cola "has always gone to great lengths to protect it and now by safeguarding it at the World of Coca-Cola, we can share its legendary legacy with people around the world," added Phil Mooney, director of archives.

Coca-Cola was created in 1886 by Atlanta pharmacist John S. Pemberton. The formula for the drink was a closely guarded secret, only known by a few people and never written down.

But in 1919, in order to secure a bank loan, then owner of The Coca-Cola Company Ernest Woodruffprovided the written formula as collateral. It was placed in a New York bank vault until the loan was paid off in 1925.

Woodruff then reclaimed the written formula and secured it at the Trust Company Bank, now SunTrust, where it had remained there until its recent move.

Coca-Cola now bottles and distributes a wide range of non-alcoholic drinks, including carbonated beverages, sports and energy drinks, juices, bottled water and bottled and canned coffee and tea. Consumers in more than 200 countries drink 1.7 billion servings of Coca-Cola products a day, according to the company, which employs more than 700,000 people.

There are rumors in NBA saying that Amare Stoudemire of New York Knicks will be sent to New Orleans Hornets in exchange for point guard Chris Paul.

Via his Twitter account, Marc Stein of ESPN said, "Now to see if Knicks elect to put Amare Stoudemire in trade proposals to New Orleans for CP3. Sources say it's one option Knicks considering."

According to an ESPN report, Knicks is close in sealing a deal with center Tyson Chandler. ESPN said that signing Chandler "could free up the Knicks to offer star forward Amare Stoudemire to the New Orleans Hornets in a trade scenario for Chris Paul, who badly wants to reunite with Chandler after their time together with the Hornets."

"Sources say that's one option New York is considering," ESPN added.

Yahoo Sports! had reported that Chris Paul will not anymore sign a contract extension with his current team and wants to be traded to the New York Knicks. Paul will become a free agent on July 1, 2012.

"Kami bertiga menyusuri pulau kecil ini selama dua malam, menyisir tetumbuhan guna mencari weta raksasa," kata Mark Moffett, 55. "Sudah berjam-jam kami habiskan tanpa hasil, sebelum akhirnya kami melihat serangga ini di atas pohon. Weta raksasa adalah serangga terbesar di dunia, dan yang kami temukan ini adalah yang terbesar yang pernah ada."

Kebanyakan orang tentu ketakutan begitu melihat weta raksasa — tapi Moffett justru meletakkan serangga itu di telapak tangannya dan memberinya wortel untuk dimakan.

"Dia menikmati wortel yang saya beri, sepertinya dia cuek saja sedang berada di tangan kami," kata Moffett, yang sengaja memberi makan perlahan-lahan karena tidak mau ambil risiko membahayakan serangga itu. Setelah mengambil foto, Moffett pun menaruh kembali weta raksasa itu ke pohon.

Weta berumur 180 juta tahun, sudah ada sebelum dinosarurus, tetapi sempat diperkirakan sudah punah.

Last week Barnes & Nobile released the Nook, its brand new e-reader, just in time for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. To acquaint bookworms everywhere with this lifestyle upgrade, the book chain ran a custom overlay ad that made a Nook out of Shine, Yahoo!’s lifestyle site.

When the user arrives on Shine, the page morphs into a Nook, displaying a fully functional Shine within the e-reader. The user is free to continue browsing the headlines and clicking through, all the while enjoying the Nook interface.

The “Close X” button is displayed prominently at the top right, which brings the user back to the normal browser view. The thin Nook banner remains along the top to compliment the 300 x 250 Nook window on the right. The wallpaper then fills in with Nooks displaying different book covers.

This first-of-its-kind custom overlay is a clever—and cleverly minimal—way to advertise this clever little device by literally showing it to users via their browsers, as opposed to telling them about it.

Saat mengujinya, terlihat bahwa dalam kondisi penggunaan ISO 100 hingga 400, kualitas warna dan noise yang dihasilkan terlihat baik dan tajam. Pada setting ISO 800 hingga 1600, mulai terlihat perubahan kualitas warna dan tingkat ketajamannya, tapi masih cukup dapat diterima jika Anda mencetak hasil foto dalam ukuran kecil.

Sistem navigasi menu dan fungsi FP7 mengandalkan layar sentuhnya yang responsif. Bagi yang terbiasa dengan tombol, tentu akan merasa sedikit kebingungan ketika pertama kali menggunakan kamera ini karena minimnya info dari setiap simbol yang tersedia pada layarnya tersebut. Tentunya dengan membaca buku manual, Anda akan dapat segera menguasai menu FP7 yang cukup sederhana.

Bagi pengguna yang memiliki ukuran jari agak besar, juga membutuhkan waktu untuk menyesuaikan diri menggunakan layar sentuhnya. Anda juga dapat mengatur shortcut baru agar dapat langsung mengakses fungsi tertentu yang akan sering digunakan.

Untuk memaksimalkan layar sentuhnya, FP-7 telah dilengkapi dengan fitur Touch Shutter, Touch AF dan Touch AF Tracking. Dengan Touch Shutter, Anda dapat langsung mengambil foto hanya dengan menyentuh layar pada objek yang tampil pada layar. Untuk Touch AF, Anda tinggal menyentuh objek tertentu di layar untuk mendapatkan fokus pada objek tersebut, tanpa mengambil foto.

Fitur Touch Shutter sedikit agak lambat jika dibandingkan dengan menekan tombol shutter seperti pada kamera kebanyakan. Namun fitur ini amat berguna jika Anda ingin mengambil foto candid atau malas menggeser jari. Kekurangannya, Anda akan sering memotret secara tidak sengaja jika belum terbiasa.

Untungnya, Anda dapat mematikan fitur ini dengan menekan simbol yang berwarna kuning pada pojok kanan bawah di sebelah simbol zoom dan kembali menggunakan tombol shutter yang ada di bagian atas bodi kamera.

Kemudahan penggunaan memang amat diperhatikan oleh Panasonic. Selain tatanan menu yang mudah dimengerti, Panasonic juga memberikan beberapa pilihan pengambilan gambar seperti Normal mode, Intelligent Auto dan Scene mode.

Bagi yang tidak ingin repot memikirkan setting yang optimal saat memotret, dapat mengandalkan iA (Intelligent Auto) yang secara pintar dapat menganalisis suatu kondisi pemotretan dan mengatur setting yang paling maksimal untuk hasil foto terbaik. Jika sudah bosan memotret, Anda juga dapat merekam video pada resolusi HD 720p. Hasil rekaman video cukup baik dan jauh di atas kebanyakan kamera video di ponsel.

Dunia 3D sepertinya lebih dikenal di industri perfilman dan televisi. Namun sebenarnya banyak perangkat yang memungkinkan pengadopsian teknologi tersebut. Di dunia gaming, Nintendo 3Ds merupakan salah satu pelopor penggunaan teknologi 3D tanpa kacamata khusus.

Mengingat banyaknya game 3D yang beredar untuk platform komputer, tak heran jika revolusi 3D di laptop dan komputer akan segera dimulai. Sebenarnya sejak tahun 2009 lalu, sudah ada beberapa laptop yang telah dilengkapi layar 3D, tapi dengan teknologi yang masih terbatas dan kurang optimal.

Kini ada beberapa pilihan teknologi 3D yang inovatif dan lebih menjanjikan bagi konsumen. Toshiba mengeluarkan dua laptop terbarunya yang mendukung dua teknologi tampilan 3D yang berbeda, Toshiba Qosmio F750 3D dan Qosmio X770.

Qosmio F750 3D memiliki layar berukuran 15.6-inci Full HD dengan teknologi Clear SuperView dengan lenticular 3D. Teknologi tersebut membuat Anda dapat menikmati konten 3D tanpa perlu menggunakan kaca mata.

Toshiba Qosmio X770

Sebagai laptop yang dirancang untuk kebutuhan gaming, Toshiba Qosmio X770 mengandalkan layar TruBrite HD berukuran 17,3 inci yang lega dan diklaim mampu menghasilkan gambar yang lebih baik. Untuk teknologi 3D di layarnya, X770 menggunakan kacamata 3D berteknologi active shutter.

Meski secara fisik terlihat bongsor, Toshiba memberikan kompensasi berupa hardware mumpuni di bagian dalamnya. Prosesor Intel generasi kedua dengan pilihan Core i7 2630QM atau dengan Intel Core i5, memori RAM DDR3 sebesar 8GB dan dua pilihan kapasitas ruang penyimpanan menggunakan HDD atau SSD, serta kartu grafis NVidia Geforce GTX 560M.

Qosmio X770 juga dilengkapi Blu-ray drive, WiDi (Wireless Display), dan speaker stereo dengan subwoofer yang menyandang nama Harman/Kardon. Untuk harga, Qosmio X770 dapat Anda bawa pulang dengan menebus Rp 15 jutaan.

Perbedaan kedua teknologi 3D terletak pada kepraktisan dan efek 3D. Untuk teknologi 3D dengan active shutter, efek 3D akan terasa lebih realistis tapi Anda masih harus mengenakan kacamata khusus yang kadang kurang nyaman bagi sebagian orang. Sedangkan teknologi 3D pada Qosmio F750 memang lebih praktis, tapi saat ini efek 3D yang ditampilkan belum sebagus pada Qosmio X770.

Tentunya vendor lain juga akan meramaikan pasar laptop gaming dengan layar 3D di Indonesia. Harga yang ditawarkan tentunya masih cukup premium. Tapi setelah mencoba beberapa game yang dioptimalkan untuk teknologi layar 3D, seperti Street Fighter dan Batman: Arkham Asylum, pengalaman bermain terasa lebih menyenangkan dibandingkan dengan tampilan 2D.

Seperti perkembangan teknologi lainnya, laptop gaming 3D akan turun ke tingkat harga yang lebih rasional. Namun bagi Anda yang mengidam-idamkan menikmati game 3D dan film 3D di laptop, alternatif yang tersedia di pasar sudah cukup memuaskan.

Inovasi di kamera digital saku ternyata tidak hanya berhenti pada implementasi video Hi-Def dan besaran megapixel saja, tapi juga pada fitur-fitur kreatif lain. Contoh terkini dapat ditemukan di jajaran kamera saku terbaru keluaran Panasonic.

Beberapa jajaran kamera Panasonic Lumix yang telah dilengkapi dengan layar sentuh, kini mengandalkan fitur baru yang berhubungan dengan kecantikan, yaitu Beauty Retouch.

Apa itu mode Beauty Retouch mode? Beauty Retouch adalah sebuah fitur yang akan memudahkan Anda untuk melakukan edit foto secara instan melalui kamera tanpa perlu lagi bantuan perangkat komputer. Bisa dibilang mode Beauty Retouch merupakan pengembangan dari fitur Panasonic sebelumnya yaitu mode Cosmetic.

Perbedaan kedua fitur ini terletak pada kelengkapan pilihan dan cara penggunaan. Jika pada fitur mode Cosmetic Anda hanya dapat melakukan edit foto sebatas mengubah tingkat gelap terang warna kulit saja, pada mode Beauty Retouch, Anda dapat melakukan berbagai penyesuaian lain yang jauh lebih lengkap pada wajah yang ada di foto.

Mode Cosmetic akan aktif saat Anda merekam foto. Sedangkan mode Beauty Retouch baru dapat digunakan setelah foto tersebut diambil. Beauty Retouch Mode terdiri dari dua bagian penyesuaian yang berbeda yaitu Aesthetic Retouch dan Make-up Retouch.

Yang pertama adalah Aesthetic Retouch. Di sini terdapat 5 penyesuaian yang dapat dilakukan, meliputi mode 'clear skin' yang berfungsi mencerahkan warna kulit, 'shine removal' untuk menghilangkan noda-noda yang terlihat di wajah, 'whitening of teeth' untuk memutihkan gigi, 'lift up' untuk memberikan efek pada pipi agar terlihat lebih tirus, dan 'eye emphasis' yang berfungsi untuk memberi efek agar mata Anda terlihat lebih besar. Jadi boleh dibilang, efek yang ada di Aesthetic Retouch mirip seperti efek hasil bedah plastik digital.

Yang kedua adalah Make-up Retouch. Opsi ini terdiri dari beberapa efek make-up yang dapat ditambahkan pada wajah Anda. Tersedia pilihan 'foundation' untuk memberikan efek alas bedak, 'lip color' untuk memberikan warna pada bibir, 'cheek color' untuk memberi efek perona pipi dan 'eye shadow' untuk memberikan efek pewarnaan pada bagian mata.

Fitur yang satu ini cukup berguna jika Anda memotret teman atau pasangan yang belum sempat berdandan sehingga mereka tidak akan kecewa saat melihat hasil foto dengan wajah yang terlalu "polos".

Yang perlu dicermati, pastikan sudut pengambilan gambar sesuai. Jika foto wajah tersebut diambil dari samping atau dari sudut yang agak unik, seperti dari atas atau dari bawah, kamera akan kesulitan dan bahkan akan gagal memberikan hasil maksimal untuk mendandani hasil foto Anda.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID,JAKARTA--iPhone memberikan banyak keuntungan untuk Apple -lebih dari setengah keuntungan industri masuk ke dalam kas perusahaan yang berbasis di Cupertino, California.

Meskipun Samsung telah mengalahkan Apple terkait volume penjualan pada kuartal di bulan September, Apple berhasil menguasai 52 persen keuntungan dengan iPhone.

Hal itu dikatakan pengamat Canaccord Genuity Michael T. Walkley yang menunjukkan keuntungan Apple berasal dari 4,2 persen pangsa pasar global dan masih kecil ketika anda menyadari pangsa pasarnya telah merosot dari 5,4 persen.

Hal itu juga layak dicatat bahwa pada kuartal ketiga tahun 2011, Kombinasi Samsung dan Apple mengumpulkan 81 persen keuntungan pasar ponsel pintar. Sisanya dikuasai delapan produsen besar yaitu Nokia, RIM, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG, HTC, semuanya meraih keuntungan dibawah 10 persen.

Walkley juga mengatakan empat tahun lalu Apple hanya menguasai 4 persen pasar ponsel pintar sedangkan Nokia memerintah dengan 67persen dan sekarang nasib kedua dua perusahaan itu balik 180 derajat.

Pencapaian Apple sebesar 52 persen sangat mengesankan, Walkley percaya Apple akan menuai keuntungan lebih besar pada kuartal keempat. Hal itu terlihat dari kondisi para kompetitor seperti RIM dan Motorola sedang berjuang di Amerika Utara dan pertumbuhan Nokia yang macet.

Apple diperkirakan akan meraih 60 persen keuntungan industri ponsel pintar. Perusahaan itu diharapkan dapat meraih penjualan 29 juta unit iPhone pada Desember dan menembus rekor 104.400.000 pada akhir 2012.

Meskipun Android lebih populer, Apple terus menjadi tren dengan mengumpulkan 50 persen pada kuartal tahun pertama dari penjualan iPhone. Apple mungkin telah menyerahkan mahkota ponsel terbesar ke Samsung, tapi hal itu sebelum peluncuran iPhone 4S.

Tablet HP TouchPad telah menyerah, tablet RIM Playbook tertinggal jauh di belakang dan sudah tak terhitung tablet Android yang tergelincir di pinggir jalan. Hingga saat ini, tidak ada tablet yang muncul sebagai pesaing kuat iPad.

Hal itu menyajikan sekelumit masalah besar dan peluang bagi Microsoft untuk meruntuhkan dominasi Apple di pasar tablet sebagaimana Microsoft yang lakukan di pasar PC. Pasar membutuhkan pesaing kuat iPad dan pesaing itu nantinya harus memiliki posisi yang kuat untuk merebut setengah pangsa pasar tablet yang tumbuh cepat.

Kesuksesan Microsoft dalam pasar tablet nantinya akan meningkatkan nilai tawar Microsoft untuk meredakan kekhawatiran investor dalam pertumbuhan pasar PC yang menyusut dan mengatur kembali pertumbuhan di masa depan. "Sinar proyektor seri terbaru Casio lebih tahan lama dibandingkan dengan proyektor konvensional yang menggunakan lampu merkuri," kata Managing Direktor PT V2 Indonesia, Rudi Hidayat di Jakarta, Senin (7/11), selaku distributor resmi di Indonesia.

Rudi mengatakan, disebut ramah lingkungan karena menggunakan teknologi Light Source Laser & LED Hybrid dengan kekuatan sumber cahaya sekitar 20.000 jam dan sangat cepat pada saat dinyalakan (hanya 5 detik) dan dimatikan (hanya 3 detik).

"Bagi masyarakat yang berminat dapat menghubungi toko-toko digital terdekat serta meminta tiga model terbaru yakni Casio Pro Series XJ-H1650 dan XJ-H1600, Short-Throw Series dan Standard Series yang dirancang ramah lingkungan," ujar dia.

Rudi mengatakan, meski lebih hemat energi namun kualitas gambar yang dihasilkan tidak kalah denga produk lain, dengan tingkat kecerahan dari 2.500 hingga 4.000 ANSI lumens.

"Proyektor terbaru Casio dapat terhubung dengan Ipad, Iphone, bahkan blackberry dan ponsel pintar lainnya yang berbasis Android sehingga memungkinkan presentasi dilaksanakan tanpa kabel," ujar Rudi.

Bahkan, menurut Rudi, proyektor ini memiliki kemampuan menghubungkan empat komputer dalam satu layar sekaligus, ataupun cukup dengan USB sudah dapat melakukan presentasi.

"Kami optimis dengan diluncurkannya proyektor Casio model Pro Series, Short-Throw Series, dan Standard Series dapat memenuhi kebutuhan para konsumendi Indonesia," ujar dia.

Rudi menargetkan pangsa pasar produk proyektor Casio sebesar 5-7 persen hingga tahun 2012, dengan target penjualan antara 9.500-13 ribu unit.

Kepala Eksekutif Nokia Stephen Elop mengatakan, "Nokia sedang mempertimbangkan pasar tablet untuk bersaing dengan iPad." "Ada kesempatan tablet baru datang," kata Elop kepada Business Week.

"Kami melihat kesempatan itu, Tidak diragukan lagi,. hal itu akan mengubah dinamika (pasar tablet)."

Sebelumnya, Nokia tidak asing dengan tablet karena Nokia pernah memperkenalkan tablet untuk mengakses internet pada 2007 dengan Nokia N810 dan N800 sebelumnya.

Mengingat, tahun itu adalah tahun yang sama dengan peluncuran iPhone, perangkat keyboard tampak terlihat tua sebelum dirilis.

Konsep komputer telah berubah. Jika dulu kita membayangkan sebuah komputer merupakan produk berdesain kotak yang terkesan kaku dan dilengkapi keyboard, lain halnya sekarang. Perusahaan asal Finlandia itu berencana memberikan layanan Wi-Fi gratis seterusnya mulai awal 2012 apabila uji coba selama dua bulan sukses. Promosi tersebut menjadi salah satu pilihan "hotspot" untuk berinternet gratis di beberapa tempat di London.

Nokia telah menyiapkan 26 hotspot untuk memberikan layanan gratis tersebut dan kebanyakan tersebar di pusat belanja West End serta wilayah Victoria, Marylebone dan Westminster juga akan mendapat poin akses wi-fi.

Perusahaan mengatakan bahwa orang tidak perlu mendaftar atau pun sign in untuk menggunakan layanan tersebut.

Nokia mengungkapkan proyek tersebut merupakan yang terbesar yang pernah direncanakan dan mereka juga berencana melakukan hal yang sama di sejumlah kota di Afrika dan India, dimana keadaan infrastruktur telekomunikasinya masih minim.

Hotspot akan diletakkan di kotak-kotak telepon yang dimiliki dan dioperasikan oleh mitra proyek Spectrum Interactive. Nokia menegaskan layanan penuh Wi-Fi gratis nantinya akan mengikutsertakan lebih dari seribu tempat di London.

Sejumlah hotspot akan ditempatkan di sekitar "penyambung jaringan" yang berkapasitas sebesar 20 megabit per detik namun kecepatan unduh akan dibatasi maksimal satu megabit bagi setiap pengguna untuk memastikan konsumen lain bisa mengakses layanan tersebut.

"Uji coba tersebut dapat membantu kami mengetahui kebutuhan masyarakat yang menggunakan layanan tersebut, sehingga kami dapat memperbaikinya dimasa depan," kata Direktur Bidang Digital dan Media Sosial Nokia, Craig Hepburn yang dikutip BBC News.

Layanan Wi-Fi gratis telah beredar di seputaran London, khususnya di distrik keuangan London, Square Mile, yang disediakan oleh The Cloud selama beberapa tahun terakhir.

Di pusat London layanan Wi-Fi gratis umumnya disediakan melalui poin akses tunggal di pertokoan, hotel, bar serta tempat hiburan. Sebagai tambahan, sejumlah Penyedia Layanan Internet (ISP) seperti BT memberikan konsumennya pilihan Wi-Fi gratis melalui layanan nirkabel merknya.

Sementara itu, layanan Wi-Fi yang terpisah-pisah tersebut telah memicu upaya Otoritas Besar London untuk menyebarkan Wi-Fi gratis di sejumlah jalan tersibuk.

Proyek Wi-Fi untuk wilayah Westminster, Kensington, Chelsea, Hammersmith dan Fulham serta wilayah lain diperkirakan telah mencapai babak negosiasi akhir.

Selain itu pembahasan penyediaan layanan Wi-Fi di sejumlah stasiun kereta bawah tanah di London bagi calon penumpang yang ingin menikmati Internet sembari menunggu kereta atau ketika sedang berjalan.

Indonesia sejak pertengahan Oktober lalu di halaman Tech Life, sebanyak 38% (7.032) peserta poll Tech Life memilih tablet sebagai produk gadget yang akan dibeli saat ini. Fakta ini memang tak bisa dipungkiri karena memang—selain di Indonesia—tablet merupakan tren global saat ini. Seperti dilansir Time, pada tahun 2011 saja, pertumbuhan unit penjualan tablet secara global sudah mencapai angka 255%, yang diprediksi akan naik menjadi 750% pada tahun 2015. Itu pun tidak lepas dari kebutuhan banyak orang atas kebutuhan komputasi yang lebih personal dengan fungsi multimedia yang lebih tinggi dari sekedar laptop.

Sebanyak 24% peserta poll memilih smartphone. Jenis gadget ini menduduki posisi kedua. Perkembangan teknologi smartphone yang signifikan saat ini hampir tak bisa dilepaskan dari tren tablet yang sedang terjadi, karena gadget ini juga merupakan bagian dari komputasi masa depan yang selalu ditunggu inovasinya. Apalagi dengan varian desain yang tepat di genggaman tapi mampu melakukan berbagai fungsi multimedia. Melansir Fortune, tantangan terbesar bagi produsen smartphone agar bisa tetap bertahan di tren gadget masa kini adalah dibutuhkannya teknologi yang bisa lebih cerdas, fitur lebih banyak, dan fleksibilitas penggunaan gadget itu sendiri.

Dari tujuh jenis gadget yang Tech Life masukkan di poll tersebut, yang paling sedikit mendapatkan respon adalah pembaca buku elektronik; cuma 1%. Banyak dari mereka yang langsung memilih tablet—yang bisa diberi fitur pembaca buku elektronik—dengan pertimbangan keefektifan harga dan flesibilitas. Padahal kalau ditilik lebih jauh, pertimbangan fungsi bisa lebih masuk akal, karena untuk membaca, dibutuhkan teknologi e-ink yang akan menyamankan mata. Sementara tablet yang beredar saat ini masih belum menyertakan e-ink di perangkatnya. Melihat kampanye mengurangi penggunaan kertas akhir-akhir ini, bisa saja pada tahun ke depannya, pembaca buku elektronik menjadi tren baru di dunia gadget. Atau paling tidak di dunia literasi. Waktu akan menjawabnya.

Salah satunya, pengunaan smartphone atau tablet dapat menyebabkan sakit di seputar leher atau "text neck". Kondisi ini sering dijumpai akibat orang lebih sering menundukkan kepala ketika menggunakan telepon seluler, layar komputer atau tablet.

Gangguan ini disebabkan peregangan leher dalam jangka panjang yang dapat menyebabkan kerusakan permanen artritis jika tidak dirawat. Para ahli mengatakan, semakin populer penggunaan smartphone dan tablet membuat kasus ini meningkat karena cedera regangan meningkat.

Dalam kondisi parah, otot-otot ini akan tertekuk sehingga akan menyakitkan jika diluruskan ke posisi yang benar. Hal ini karena sendi dan jaringan di leher tak dibangun untuk dapat menahan posisi membungkuk dalam waktu yang lama, sehingga akan menyebabkan rasa nyeri jika terlalu banyak tekanan. Kondisi ini juga dapat menyebar ke sakit kepala, lengan bahu, dan nyeri pergelangan tangan.

"Bayangkan jika Anda duduk dengan kaki disilangkan dalam waktu yang lama, maka akan terasa kaku dan sakit saat kembali ke posisi normal. Itulah yang terjadi pada leher, "kata Ratna Lancaster dari Klinik Sakit Punggung di Leeds, Inggris.

Jika seseorang terus-menerus melakukan hal ini, maka tubuh secara bertahap akan beradaptasi dengan tekanan sehingga menyebabkan peningkatan keparahan kerusakan yang mungkin tak dapat direalisasikan. Jika posisi kepala dan leher yang salah dalam waktu yang lama, dapat menyebabkan kelengkungan dari leher yang sulit untuk dipulihkan sehingga berpotensi menyebabkan masalah kesehatan serius.

Sementara Tim Hutchful dari British Chiropractic Association ini menyebutkan anak-anak lebih berisiko terkena gangguan itu. Sebab berat kepala mereka lebih besar dari tubuh. Ketika kepala membungkuk ke depan maka otot lebih banyak digunakan.

Meski begitu, kondisi ini dapat dihindari dengan beristirahat setiap 10 menit, duduk lurus ke depan dengan memegang telepon atau tablet sedikit lebih tinggi sehingga posisi table setingkat dengan mata.
